My research problematizes the mapping of woman onto the nation by investigating the cultural and political structures of the state that continue to silence her. I argue that a woman's deification and domestic imprisonment were contradictory to the goals of nineteenth century nationalism, as emancipation became a self-legitimating construct of masculine authority and the woman's inability to imagine and conceptualize her own being.
Yet, there were women who were real and integral to the nation creating their autonomous spaces. Partha Chatterjee claims that colonial historiographies have yet to unearth the missing narratives of women.
By examining the dualities of subjugation and self-enlightenment, I intend to shed light on restoring the woman's subjectivity. My goal is to focus on the different forms of resistance that challenge the male patriarchies while disassembling these female spaces of subordination that continue to replicate itself in different forms into the present.
